7.Are there grocery stores or restaurants close by?
We have a grocery at Poipu Shopping village (Whealer) where it is less than a mile from home. There are many groceries, restaurants and shops at Old Koloa town two miles from home. (I saw some people ride the bike to the store for their exercise :) Please visit our home location page for driving direction from our vacation rental home or the airport to these grocery stores (Walmart, Costco Wholesale, Koloa Town; Big Save and Sueoka', and Whealer store)
There are many restaurants close by Bird of Paradise home; Casa di Amici and Poipu Beach Broiler are in walking distance. Three restuarants at Hyatt (Dondero's, Grand Hyatt Kauai Luau, IIima Terrace) and Poipu bay golf are also within walking distance through the greenbelt of Poipu kai resort or just a minute drive. There are a few restaurants close by and most of them have kids menus.
1. Poka-dogs 808 635 6354 in Poipu shopping village (~1 mile from home). Just a different hot-dog that the children can try. However adults might like it since there are verity of hawaii favor (the cost of hot dogs is around $7 each). There are also many restaurants in this mall (a few are quite expensive eg. Roy's). The Poipu shopping village is on Poipu Rd. Turn left at the stop sign when you drive from Bird of Paradise home.
2. Poipu Beach Broiler 808 742-6433 is on the same way going to Poipu shopping village. It is also close by home and very close by the resort swimming pool/tennis. You have to turn at the Banyan tree a couple of hundred yards after you make your left turn at the stop sign.
3. Casa di Amici is close by home but more suitable for adults( on the way back from Brennecke's or the Babby beach, you will see its sign on your left).
4. I would like to recommend Sunny Brunch at Hyatt or Sheraton. Children can choose whatever they want. There are also many good restaurants in Hyatt (808 742 1234) We recommend Lu'aus at Hyatt whcih we think it is very good with the hula entertainment. The hula is free of charge in case you like to see the hula dance only.
5. Poipu Bay Golf also has a restaurant in the club. The restaurant has the best golf views and reasonable food at reasonable prices.
6. Koloa Fish market in Koloa town is the local restaurant that has Hawaii plate lunches, take out only. Our son is a very picky eater but he loves the Kalua pig there. Your children might like to try their plate lunches.
7. Taqueria Nortenos 742-7222 mexican food and very reasonable price.
8. Roy's Poipu Bar&Grill, a bit more expensive.
9. Also Koloa town has about four more restaurants ( somewhat cheaper than Hyatt and Poipu Mall restuarants).
10. If you go to Kalaheo ( on the way to Waimea Canyon) try Kalaheo steak house or the pies at Camp house grill ( a blue building on your right ) immediately after you pass the light at the top. We and many of the guests like their paradise pie ( actually all of the pies are excellent) for $13/whole pie.
11. Brick oven Pizza in Kalaheo is also good and cheaper than the tourist areas ( but still expensive compared to mainland Pizzas).
Here are two links information about grocery and restaurants.
8. What is the weather this time of year and on this part of the island will be like?
We provide a rough idea of the weather pattern at Poipu weather and Kauai statistic page.
9. Does the Bird of Paradise home have a safe?
We do not have the safe box in our home. Although, we belive our home is in a great location and very safe in Poipu Kai resort where there is 24 hour resort security, we still recommend you to keep your valuables with you (or bring as small amount of your valuable to the trip). We have owned the house for fifteen years and have not had any security related problems. Personally, we want to provide as many things as possible and have you relax while you are on vacation. We have been thinking about the safe, however, we want to make sure that we could offer a really really secure safe box system before we decide to have one.
10. Any kitchen supply's you recommend that we bring (coffee filters, sweet and low, etc)?
we provide beach towels, pepper and salt, paper coffee filters, normal sugar, plastic wrap, aluminium foil, plastic containers. We also have small "starter" supply of soaps/ lotion/ shampoo/ conditioner, laundry detergent and laundry softener, liquid dish soap and dishwasher detergents and hand soap. Some of these starter suppliers are provided as a courtesy and are not replenished but they are enough to last several days.
Also, you might want to pack your essentials: medicines, bathing suits, sunglass and (the lockbox code number) in your hand carry bag. If your baggage gets delayed, you can still get into our home and begin relaxing.
